The Legend of Kaldi and His Dancing Goats

Our story starts with Kaldi, an Ethiopian goat herder, who lived around the 9th century. Kaldi was a simple man, tending to his goats in the lush highlands, unaware that he was about to stumble upon a discovery that would change the world.

One ordinary day, Kaldi noticed his goats behaving strangely. They were frolicking and dancing with an unusual energy after eating the red berries from a specific bush. Curious and a bit bewildered, Kaldi decided to try the berries himself. To his amazement, he felt a surge of energy and alertness, unlike anything he had experienced before.

The Monks’ Nightly Vigil

Eager to share his discovery, Kaldi took the berries to a local monastery. The monks, sceptical at first, decided to throw the berries into the fire, dismissing them as potentially harmful. As the berries roasted, an enticing aroma filled the air, captivating the monks. They quickly retrieved the roasted beans from the embers, ground them up, and boiled them in water, creating the first cup of coffee.

The monks found that the coffee kept them alert and energised during their nightly prayers and vigils. The word of this miraculous drink spread from the monastery, weaving its way through continents and cultures, becoming the beverage we cherish today.

From Ethiopia to the Arabian Peninsula

As coffee’s popularity grew, it travelled from Ethiopia to the Arabian Peninsula, flourishing in the Yemeni soil. The port city of Mocha became a pivotal hub for coffee trade, spreading the beans to distant lands. Coffee houses, known as “qahveh khaneh,” sprang up in the Middle East, becoming centres of social activity and intellectual exchange.

The Global Journey of African Coffee

The journey of African coffee did not stop there. It traversed oceans and continents, reaching Europe and the Americas, where it was embraced and became integral to daily life. Coffee’s journey is a testament to Africa’s contribution to global culture, a theme that resonates deeply with African Stories Coffee.
